Back To School Dental Tips

It’s that time of year that has parents and kids going through an array of emotions. Back to school is filled with anxiety and excitement, and it’s easy to lose track of some things, like dental check-ups and packing healthy snacks.

Back to school is stressful enough, so let us take a little off your plate. Step back, take a deep breath, and use this back to school dental care guide to make sure your child’s smile is picture-perfect.

Getting dental check-ups and teeth cleanings every six months is an important part of your child’s oral health routine. Look back on the last day of school pictures from the spring and see how much they’ve grown! Their mouths are changing as well and need proper care. Seeing a dentist regularly can help diagnose problems early and help prevent bigger problems later.

Here are some tips to get you ready for the new school year:

  1. Make time for a dental routine. Build a morning brush (and floss!) into your daily prep and do the same for bedtime. Consistency is helpful for kids of all ages, and it can be comforting for those struggling with new school schedules.
  2. Let your child choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. It doesn’t matter how old your child gets, having some autonomy over even the smallest aspects of life can mean everything to them.
  3. Encourage drinking lots of water and avoid those sugary drinks.
  4. Have older siblings help. Big brothers and sisters can set examples for good oral hygiene.
  5. Reward good oral habits, especially for younger children who need positive reinforcement.
  6. If your child plays sports, invest in a mouth guard for extra protection.

The Doctors and Team at Burns Family Dentistry want to wish everyone a happy and healthy school year!
