Burns DDS proud to be part of UNCW Jr. Seahawks Summer Program
Area middle school students will get a taste of the college experience during the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s annual Junior Seahawk Academy 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 18-22. The academy is designed to help all children, especially underserved children, develop and maintain an interest in learning math, science and technology while participating in fun and creative hands-on activities.
Around 60 students between the ages of 11-14 will participate in this year’s program. Through fun and creative hands-on activities, these students will explore STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), health and education careers, reading skills and more.
Studies show that exposing students to a college campus encourages them to consider college as an option for their future. According to Angelia Reid-Griffin, Junior Seahawk Academy program coordinator, 80 percent of program participants graduate high school and go on to attend a college or university.
This year’s theme is “Healthy Habits, Happy Humans” and focuses on health issues that affect young children. Dr. Casey Burns, our treatment coordinator Bekah and our hygienist Julie will be teaching the students about the importance of dental care through fun activities/demonstrations as part of the STEM program. On the last day of the program, students will showcase their accomplishments and achievements from the past week. An award will be given to the student who most demonstrated the promise of a devotion to leadership and learning.
