Chewing Sugar-Free Gum May Reduce Risk Of Cavities

sugar-free-gumDid you know that chewing sugar-free gum may help reduce the risk of cavities by increasing the flow of saliva, which helps wash away bacteria and “can raise tooth exposure to calcium and phosphate.”? The American Dental Association suggests chewing sugar-free gum after meals for about 20 minutes, while also pointing out that chewing gum is “not a substitute for regular brushing and flossing.”

MouthHealthy.org provides information on chewing gum to prevent dental caries and the ADA provides a list of sugar-free gum with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

So if you cannot brush/floss after every meal, rinsing your mouth with water or chewing sugar-free gum may help to maintain your healthy smile until you are able to brush 🙂
