Diet and Dental Health

nutrition monthIn honor of March being National Nutrition Month, here are a few recommendations for foods in your diet that can benefit your dental health:

Cheese, milk, yogurt, leafy greens and almonds, are all foods that contain high amounts of calcium as well as other nutrients.  Meat, poultry, fish, milk and eggs are full of protein and the best sources of phosphorus. Both calcium and phosphorous play an important role in dental health by protecting and rebuilding tooth enamel.

Fruits and vegetables are good choices for a healthy smile since they are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth. These foods also help stimulate saliva production, which washes harmful acids and food particles away from teeth and helps neutralize acid, protecting teeth from decay.  In addition, many fruits and veggies contain vitamin C which is important for healthy gums and quick healing of wounds and vitamin A which aids in building tooth enamel.

To wash all these healthy foods down, choose fluoridated water.  It contains no sugar or acids that can be harmful to teeth.
