Let’s Taco Bout Teeth
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
- Cinco de Mayo is a fun filled holiday celebrating the victory of Mexico in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
- In the USA, Cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with substantial Mexican-American populations.
- Did you know that in some cultures, instead of a tooth fairy collecting teeth, it is a mouse? In Spain, Mexico, and other countries in Latin America a mouse named Ratoncito Peréz, or El Raton de Los Dientes comes by and collects teeth!
- It all started in 1877 in the story of La Ratita Presumida (The Vain Little Mouse). It was then that King Alfonso XIII of Spain lost a tooth at the age of 8 and author Luis Coloma was commissioned to write a story for his little rodent. It was then that Perez was resurrected and began a life of collecting teeth.
Don’t forget about the two T’s, Taco’s and Teeth! Happy Cinco de Mayo!
